Ken Mack: From Porn to Publishing (pt. 2- NSFW)

Never ever count out the skinny kid from homeroom. Sometimes that one hundred and thirty pound high school senior takes a while to come  into their own. Case in point beefy for porn star-turned-publishing editor. Smart, sexy, confident and down-to-earth the man behind the moniker of Ken Mack graced us at Diggin' to China with his thoughts on family, the adult film biz and flagging realities of the publishing industry in America.

Read on in Part two of Ken Mack: From Porn to Publishing

DTC:    Does your family and friends know of your adult film work?

Ken Mack: I have never discussed with Mom and Dad.  I was in the Real Man Next Door section of Playgirl in 1996 and they found out.  One of my older sister's was a Playboy Bunny™ in the 80's so my family is pretty cool about that kind of stuff
DTC:      How do you deal with the recognition?  Like having random men Facebook you and ask for interviews about fucking [laughs]

Ken Mack: It is all-good. I always tried to get Doug and Jay to give the guys last names on Amateur Straight Guys.  You can't Google and find a model with one name
DTC:      That's very true and not helpful to the model
Ken Mack: I had 50 scenes on the site, but just under "KEN” no one will ever find that via Google. After 7 years, I can't believe people are still interested in Ken Mack.
DTC:  Oh but they are!  One of the selfish reasons I wanted to interview you was, as someone who makes sexually explicit work myself, how do you feel about the mainstreaming of Porn? It seems even gay porn, once illegible in our lifetimes is now as common as can be. Careers are launched via sex tape.
Ken Mack: I think America is totally fucked up because you can spend all your prime time viewing watching shows like law and order or CSI with really fucked up criminal shit.  Murder, rape, kidnapping, etc, but Janet Jackson shows a breast and the network has a meltdown.  I still think Timberlake screwed her on that one.
DTC: I agree I also think it was completely planned and then they backtracked. You are free to show penetration as long as its a stabbing.
Ken Mack: In Europe you see full nudity on TV all the time.  In TV ads even, right. I just don't see how people see the re-enactment of crime as being entertaining. Sex should make you happy
DTC: Has your day job and your porn past ever collided? You said you got your current position because of someone you met via the adult film industry
Ken Mack: Well, I work for a gay, I mean LGBT magazine.
My publisher used to publish a magazine all about gay porn called X-Factor I met the editor of XFactor at the 2006 gayvn's at the Rage in L.A.    He recruited me to my current job.  We no longer publish XFactor, but our mainstream magazine is still going strong. I think if I wanted to work further in porn, I would have to leave Arizona and move to Cali. Arizona is a really fucked up state right now
DTC: Yes, yes it is. Let’s talk about publishing- I'm a hard core reader- seriously I like to read, fuck and watch/make films those pretty much sum me up- Magazines have had a rough few years
Ken Mack: I think print will always be around.  it is just a waiting game to see who will survive
Kind of like vinyl
DTC: Which still sounds superior to digital
Ken Mack: Kids are buying new music on vinyl and I think print will come back at some point
DTC:  I'm not an e-reader fan- though I do owe the Internet 99% credit for my career.
Ken Mack: same here I had over 1,000 albums by the late 80's. I still have about 300
DTC: My friend Scott (16 years in- he's my heterohusband) has about 1500 or so- I have now refused to move that collection again until he buys a house. He has one last move in me.
DTC: So you popped in made some cash and have moved on:  Moved on from porn to your passion it seems journalism
Ken Mack:  My degree is broadcast journalism Well, print journalism has lost its breaking news element because of the internet.  I like the challenge of still trying to create something that people want.
DTC:      Print though has a depth and tactile function the Internet will never have. What do you think was the main motivator for you to get involved in porn?

Ken Mack:  Well, I am definitely an exhibitionist.  I never really watched porn to tell the truth.  I saw an ad for Titan videos and thought, "hey, those guys are more like me than the other stuff I have seen” I sent them some photos and they called me that day.    I was floored.
DTC:      Were you always an exhibitionist?
Ken Mack: Yeah But I spent a lot of time in my room listening to music.
DTC:  You seem incredibly grounded and together. Why do you think so many guys who go into porn end up self-destructing when they leave the industry?
Ken Mack: Well, I think if I lived in LA or San Francisco, things might be a lot different.  Arizona is far enough away to keep things in perspective and the 2 cities are so completely different.
Ken Mack: I also think a lot of it is that I was a lot older than most guys when I started.
DTC: Do you have any interest in acting in the future?
Ken Mack: I have thought about it. I am floored when people have commented on my acting in videos. I was only trying to bust a nut and the rest just kind of happened )
DTC: Well we all are [laughs]
Ken Mack: I know.  Crazy huh?
DTC: So what are your goals/plans for the future?
Ken Mack: That is a tough one.  They say life starts at 40, but this economy is making it tough to be optimistic about much of anything.: Everyday I drive to work and see another business closed or hear about someone getting laid off.   It is really sad. If it weren’t for the weather I would move to Toronto in a heartbeat.
DTC:  Agreed- I keep feeling, given the economy and censorship, my only option is moving to Canada or Europe to continue my work. We're looking at Vancouver BC for my husband's PhD program.
Ken Mack: If DADT gets repealed and prop 8 gets overturned, I will have a little bit of restored faith.  Mostly, I am just very thankful to be healthy, have a decent job, an amazing partner and hey 76 degrees today in December is pretty good
DTC:      You seem really smitten with him- How'd you guys meet?
Ken Mack: adam4adam.com  )
DTC:      [laughs] Ah the Internet! Had he seen your work?
Ken Mack: Yes, he is a big fan of my work, but now he is greedy and doesn't want to share!
DTC:      How do you feel that some people see porn stars as role models these days?
Ken Mack: well, better than Dexter on Showtime
DTC:  What are a few things that you took away from the porn industry. What sticks with you most?
Ken Mack: I think that it is like any other business.  Always looking for the next new thing, so enjoy it while you can
DTC:      What do you think the next new thing will be?
Ken Mack: 3D porn?
DTC:      I hear it's here or coming soon....
