Chinese artist Zhang Peng creates surreal and disturbing fantasy-themed works that inhibit the borderlands of horror as his childhood protagonists (almost exclusively young girls) are captured in a freeze-frame tableau of ornately stylized cinematic expression. A contemporary of highly stylized photographers like Americans Joshua Hoffine and Holly Andres from the tradition of hper-real photographers like Gregory Crewdson and Jeff Wall.
Peng's heroines stand on the precipice of forbidden knowledge and exploit the stereotyped tropes of females in traditional/modern Chinese imagery. Sublime and terribly disturbing.
