EL GRITO DEL BRONX

El Grito del Bronx , the english language drama written by Migdalia Cruz is breathing a fiery life on stage at Portland's Milagro Theatre (now celebrating their 25th Anniversary season). The powerfully moving story of a young woman who as her wedding day approaches must make peace with her past, a abused and sheltered mother, a violent deranged drunkard father and her beloved brother who's descent into madness and violence has cast a haunted shadow over Lulu and her hopes for a future. The memory play feels like a Puerto Rican Tennessee Williams by way of Pedro Almodovar. It's a stunning mix of spectral victims haunting a former-junkie serial killer on death row, dying of AIDS; the domestic comedies and tragedies of first generation American life; and the immense survivors guilt of women whose lives have been irrevocably altered by the violence of men.
Christi Miles anchors the entire play with a playful sense of irony that barely covers her crushing self-loathing and fears as Lulu, a young woman torn between her Catholic guilt of her violent past and her longing to marry her nice live-in Jewish boyfriend Ed (played with supreme tenderness by Spencer Conway).

Matthew Dieckman (as Jesus, Lulu's brother) gives an absolutely authentic and riveting performance as a soul baring sociopath who's violent ways mask the heart of a sad child. His only steady contact is the kindness of another convicted death row inmate in the cell next door (a compassionate Victor Mack). Papo (as Jesus now calls himself) is tormented by the ghosts of two of his victims , a racist hillbilly gas station attendant ( Kurt Conroyd, who alternates between frightening and pitiable with ease) and his abusive father José (a truly menacing Stephen Lisk). José's brutal death scene is a powerfully intense moment onstage. Three mothers who have all lost a son to violent death create a Greek chorus of sorts adding a complex pathos of the multicultural, multiracial face of oppressed women. Marjorie Tatum, Lisamarie Harrison, and Ithica Tell each in their own specific way paint the painful portraits of mothers who are left to survive beyond their children.
The lighting and sound design for El Grito Del Bronx is sublime and solid through out and the direction by Antonio Sonera is strong in keeping with the impressionistic nature of the memory play conventions, at times a soft memory, at others a fever dream. This is a powerful production and a must see if you are in or near the Portland area. Now through April 25th!!

Beau Breedlove- Unzipped Asstwat (pt2)

Last time I wrote about Beau Breedlove I called him a  bottom feeding attention whore asstwat, and I got hate mail for that... I now stand corrected. What I should have said was he was a TACKY bottom feeding attention whore asstwat.  Seriously I don't know who annoys me more Beau or the nearly 100 people who showed up have him sign copies of Unzipped magazine. It's just all around tacky folks.  I have personally seen Beau at bars all last week trying desperately to hold court like some psuedo-celebutant, funny thing was though, except for a total of THREE troll-like men, he was pretty much a legend in his own mind. Everyone else seemed to actively be avoiding him or just uninterested.  Here's a quote from the article that I feel exemplifies this man :

"Back when I was new to Portland, I was selfish," Breedlove admits, pointing to his cock. "I was like, take care of me! I didn't suck, I didn't want cock in my mouth. I would tell these guys: You can jack off afterward, I don't care. But I don't want to be involved."

Class act all the way.  Selfish back then, as opposed to now? I also totally agree with Jon over at Gaycondo- Beau is a total butterface. and I still bet F-A-T by thirty.

*-I swiped the photo Matt Davis' wry and spot on article over at The Portland Mercury. Yes the same Matt Davis who wrote such a lovely piece about our recent court drama. xo

Gentleman Reg

Yes, yes more posts about Gentleman Reg, I know, I know, but I must as Jet Black is an amazing record from start to finish. The follow up to Darby and  Joan (and a hilariously awkward cameo in John Cameron Mitchell's ode to sexual release Shortbus.) ranges from poppy rockers like How We Exit, oddly danceable down-tempo numbers (we're in a thunderstorm) to total wrist slashers. Rewind (sample lyric- There's no point in going back when a masterpiece is crumbling) is about as heartbreaking  as any thing this side of Antony and the Johnsons.  His records can be tricky to find here in the states even in a music obsessed city like Portland (damn you superior Canadian indie rock scene!!) but are available on itunes and I totally recommend  JET BLACK immediately!

How Freakin' Cute....

So after all the stressful and heavy stuff I decided to put up something light and adorable. So here is are some pics from an email a friend sent me. I don't know when this happened but here is what the email said.
It has been so hot in SA for over a week…40+ degrees Celsius everyday, very dry also. A guy at work lives at Maude.  His wife sent him these photos of a little Koala which just walked into the back porch looking for a bit of heat relief. She filled up a bucket and this is what happened!

Homophobia In Portland!! MIKE SOTO edition

Taylor and I sat down with the Portland Mercury this morning to discuss the  Andrew Bridge/Farris fiasco, homophobic chief of security Mike Soto and the still unravelling cases an ongoing gay witch hunt which you can read HERE!

So we assumed after the state district attorney (as well as the Dean's office) tossed out all the charges against Taylor and KATU report Dan Tilkin exposed the charmer that is gay vigilante Andrew Bridge/Farris, we assumed life was going to get easier. ..
Not so.

You see Mike Soto has requested Taylor come to a meeting to discus what he calls Taylor's "criminal trespassing" on PSU campus- you see even though Taylor was a  student in great academic standing, even though the dean's office and the DA found him innocent , even though this was clearly a case of abuse and fraud- Mike wants to question Taylor.

so I sent him the following email, which has not and probably will not be responded to.
Mr. Soto,

Taylor  and I would like to know precisely what there is to discuss about the "criminal trespass warning" . The Dean of Students office as well the state District Attorney's office "Dismissed in the  Interest of Justice" any and all charges against my husband, Taylor Vineyard, so we were curious to the specific nature of this requested meeting and as to why the "trespass" from PSU campus was not immediately expunged. With all due respect, we do not believe this is a matter up for discussion.
